thanks a lot for the submission and welcome to our group :}}
I looked at your uploads. I love all of your hermies (my name for them) too. I especially liked your tank setup. I haven't done anything with a deeper water container, mine could go in the water but it wasn't very deep. I think I'm going to be trying something more like that soon.
Also, we used to use the coconut fiber but got lots of gnats (or whatever small bug), just wondering, do you have any problems with that?
about gnats, i have never really had much issue with gnats.. (luckily) i try to use a pretty high concentration of marine salt on all the tank decorations.. i soak all the moss in it, all the branches etc and i use a lot of it mixed in the substrate too. i think this is the best thing that deters all kinds of bugs as well as mold. my baskets used to get moldy sometimes but i soak them in marine salt and it doesnt happen anymore. dont know if you were doing that already but the best thing ive found for that stuff is to really soak everything very thoroughly with marine salt. :>> plus they can eat it and stuff.
now obvoiusly for anyone else reading this, by this we mean, that would not be normal salt or sea salt or even 'aquarium salt' sometimes sold at fish stores, its actually marine salt that people use to mix water for salt water aquariums... (and that most hermie owners have lying around) its not too expensive and stuff but its a specific kind of salt and thats what the hermies need. im assuming you know that but other people reading this might not.
so yeah thats what i would try for gnats. they really seem to love the fiber though.. they molt like crazy in it for me. // i like it best mixed half and half with fine sand.
ok let us know how stuff goes! if you redo your tank please send us some pictures :>>
