q Does any needle work?
a Yes, so long as the thread fits. The holes in the book are made with the awl so the needle is only to guide the thread.
q How long does the thread need to be?
a I'm not sure, I just use about 2 feet and tie more on (between holes on the spine) if I run out.















For your alternative sewing guide I noticed that you mentioned that you wrote you don't recommend that method for sewing loose sheets. Are there any other methods you would recommend for binding loose sheets that would lay flat?
I'd love to bind a thick sketchbook with loose sheets but so far I'm not finding too many methods to do so. Thanks!

I used 48 sheets of 9" x 6" 80 lb drawing paper.
