Questions I've answered:
q Does any needle work?
a Yes, so long as the thread fits. The holes in the book are made with the awl so the needle is only to guide the thread.
q How long does the thread need to be?
a I'm not sure, I just use about 2 feet and tie more on (between holes on the spine) if I run out.

There is nothing that I have been able to find. I live in the US, people only care about antiques and brand-new manufactured goods with only a small percentage of people who like handcrafted goods.
